Investors Class Visa to Canada

For those who have attained wealth and appropriate business experience this may be the best route for you and your family.  For most business people this is the easiest way to migrate to Canada; it provides you the advantage of being able to choose which province you would like to live in and unconditional permanent residence for you, your spouse and/or your dependent children.  As permanent residents you and your family are protected by Canadian law and eligible for most social services available to Canadian citizens.

An investor should have a personal net worth of $1,600,000 CAD and be willing to make a deposit of $800,000 to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, which is held for 5 years, after this time it is returned to you.  This amount does not bear any interest and is used to create jobs and growth in the Canadian economy.

Unlike the entrepreneur or self-employed categories an investor does not actually need to set up a business when coming to Canada, which allows you the freedom to pursue other opportunities.  If you are not able to or do not want to use your funds for the $800,000 investment, financing plans are available for a loan to be made payable to the Canadian government on the investors behalf.  An advantage to financing the deposit is the financial flexibility to invest or use your own funds elsewhere.  Of course, we can assist you in getting the most competitive rates for financing.

Investors may also take advantage of the 5 year tax holiday!  Investors can deposit their funds into a tax sheltered “immigration trust” for 5 years, sparing their funds from taxation.  If these funds are invested wisely not only will you be saving on taxes but you would also see your funds grow tremendously.  The trust needs to be established before you enter Canada or within 60 months of becoming a resident of Canada.

An investor should have experience with a business by being a part of full owner in a mid size business or experience in a high level management position in a larger company for at least 2 years of the last 5 years.  You also need to obtain a minimum of 35 points in a selection grid designed to determine whether you will be able to become economically established in Canada, which actually is not a lot of points.  The following are the selection grid criteria:

EDUCATION (Maximum 25 points)-based on level of education from high school diploma onwards

BUSINESS EXPERIENCE (Maximum 35 points)-the work experience must be within 5 years of application

Two years of business experience=20 points

Three years of business experience=25 points

Four years of business experience=30 points

Five years of business experience=35 points

ADAPTABILITY (Maximum 6 points)-based on:

  • Whether you have visited Canada in within the 5 year period prior to making an application to explore business possibilities (6 points)
  • Whether you have participated in a provincial-federal business immigration venture (6 points)

AGE (Maximum 6 points)-assessed from age 16 & under to age 54 & up

ABILITY IN ENGLISH and/or FRENCH (Maximum 24 points)-based on first or second language proficiency in the areas of speaking, reading, writing and listening
